Above: Researcher Tom Pintaric experiences Duran Duran in a special immersive head set.
Researchers at the University of Southern California's Integrated Media Systems Center are developing a system called "Immersivision" which can surround a person in 360 degrees of interactive audio-visual media using DVD players, or game consoles such as the Sony Playstation 2, or the Microsoft XBOX.
Immersivision can use special headsets which track the movement of a person's head. This tracking allows viewers to experience video from any angle (0-360 degrees) by simply turning their heads. In the next few years, immersive 360 degree video and audio will emerge as a new entertainment medium, and this experimental recording of Duran Duran in concert will represent an historic milestone in the medium's development.
