Digital Worlds Institute

From May-December 2001, I worked as a virtual environments consultant for the Digital Worlds Institute, a joint program between the colleges of engineering and fine arts at the University of Florida.  Collaborating with Mr. Andy Quay, Prof. James Oliverio, and Dr. Julian Flores, we developed a low cost projection based virtual reality system for student projects.  We based the system on the NAVE design pioneered at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (Spain).  Other consulting duties included student technical advisement,  presentations to the digital arts and sciences program, and fostering external partnerships.

Images of the completed system are below.  The two side screens can be positioned at multiple angles to the center screen at angle settings of 90, 120, and 180 degrees.  Imagery for each rear-projected screen is generated on a workstation.  Stereoscopic 3D imaging can be achieved if each user  wears inexpensive polarized glasses.  Audio is provided by a surround sound speaker system.
